My passion for birth work really began when I was 12 years old and I attended the birth of my first nephew, I remember being swelled with emotion and thinking to myself, “That was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen!” I then found myself supporting friends and family during their pregnancy and birth journeys over the years and eventually became certified so that I could support even more families! After my pregnancy and hospital birth with my oldest daughter, it sparked a deep interest in learning about more individualized and holistic care. This brought me to researching out of hospital birth options which lead me to seeking care from homebirth midwives when I became pregnant with my second daughter. After her homebirth, I knew that I wanted to be more involved in the midwifery model of care so I began working as part of the admin staff at California Birth Center. Soon after, I became pregnant with my son and after having him at the birth center, I had a great desire to train as a midwife assistant and provide the same level of care I had received and support families as they welcome their little ones into the world. In high school, she felt an undeniable calling toward midwifery, spending countless hours reading thrifted, well-worn midwifery books. After experiencing her own rural home birth with her daughter in 2009, Emma began her journey of supporting families as a doula after completing the Heart and Hands doula training. This led her to later complete her training as a newborn care specialist, marking the start of her decade-long path in birth work. To further her expertise, Emma pursued prerequisites with the renowned midwife Elizabeth Davis in San Rafael, California, before enrolling in The National Midwifery Institute, where she completed her didactic studies. Well, It All Started Here: I have often found myself wishing I had known about doulas before I had my five children lying on my back in a hospital bed feeling alone and like I had no voice, no choice or alternatives to epidurals each time. Likewise, as a postpartum mom, I struggled with all the things: bloody nipples and painful breasts; long-lasting postpartum depression; pressure to "bounce back" and continue homemaking for the family; distracted and limited support from partner and family; and very little knowledge of cues and normal milestones for my babies. Of course my kiddos all survived my "learning on the job without a manual" but it was definitely the hard way. I did my best and I know that's what you want, too. Great News! I understand so much more now and I want to share it with every mama who wants to hear, see, and feel gentler more supportive care. My Doula History While raising my five kids and before moving to Sacramento in 2017, I lived in Eugene, Oregon.
