The Ultimate Hospital Bag Guide: What Our Doulas Actually Recommend Packing
/The Ultimate Hospital Bag Guide: What Our Doulas Actually Recommend Packing
By Rebecca Gensch, Certified Birth Doula
Rebecca Rose Doula Services
Packing your hospital bag is one of those milestones that suddenly makes everything feel real.
One minute you're researching baby names, and the next you're wondering, "What do I actually need?"
After supporting hundreds of births throughout the Sacramento region, we've learned something important:
You don't need more stuff, you need the right stuff.
These are the products our doulas consistently recommend because we've watched them make labor, birth, recovery, and those first hours with your baby more comfortable.
At the bottom of this post you'll also find our FREE downloadable Hospital Packing Checklist along with direct shopping links to every product we recommend.
Let's pack your bag, babe. π€
Our Favorite Labor Tools
One of our favorite natural pain management tools! A TENS unit uses gentle electrical stimulation to help reduce pain, encourage your body's natural endorphins, and keep you moving during labor. It's portable, drug-free, and works especially well in early labor.
Don't underestimate this little tool! Squeezing a birth comb during contractions provides competing sensory input, helping redirect your brain's attention through the Gate Control Theory of Pain. It's simple, affordable, and one of our doulas' favorite comfort measures.
Create Your Birth Space
πΈ Photo Banner
Hospital rooms can feel cold and unfamiliar. Hanging up your ultrasound pictures, engagement photos, wedding photos, or favorite memories instantly makes the room feel like yours.
Birth thrives in spaces that feel safe and familiar.
Seeing your people, your baby, and your why can be incredibly grounding during labor.
πͺ Command Hooks
These are one of my favorite little birth hacks.
We use them to hang your photo banner, affirmation cards, robe, or anything else that helps transform a hospital room into your birth space.
They're tiny, inexpensive, and make decorating your room so much easier.
β¨ Fairy Lights
Harsh fluorescent lighting isn't exactly relaxing.
Battery-powered fairy lights create a warm, calming atmosphere that feels much more peaceful for labor.
π Galaxy Projector
Is it necessary? Absolutely not.
Do I love it? Absolutely.
This turns a plain hospital room into a cozy, calming environment that feels far less clinical.
Dress Like You're Giving Birth, Not Like You're Sick
π Labor Gown
Girl... this might be one of my favorite birth recommendations.
There's actually fascinating psychology behind this.
When we put on a hospital gown, our brain often subconsciously associates it with being sick, vulnerable, or needing medical care.
But birth isn't an illness.
It's a normal physiological event.
Your body was beautifully designed to do this.
Laboring in your own gown, oversized T-shirt, robe, or comfy dress that smells like your own laundry detergent helps you feel like yourself.
It sends subtle messages to your brain that you're safe, capable, and in control.
It may seem like a tiny thing, but these little subconscious cues can make a big difference in how you experience labor.
Protect Your Oxytocin
Oxytocin is the hormone that drives labor.
It loves feeling...
Safe
Calm
Warm
Dark
Private
The more we can support those feelings, the happier labor tends to be.
π΄ Cooling Sleep Mask
One of my favorite doula tricks?
Right before we leave for the hospital, I'll often hand my client a sleep mask and say,
"Okay babe... we're going inward now."
Birth loves dark, quiet spaces.
A sleep mask blocks out bright hospital lights and helps your body stay focused on labor instead of everything happening around you.
π§ Bose Noise-Canceling Headphones
Hospitals are noisy.
IV pumps beep.
People come and go.
Doors open.
Monitors alarm.
Throw on your favorite playlist, worship music, birth affirmations, or hypnobirthing tracks and let yourself disappear into your own little world.
Protect your peace.
Walk into birth unapologetically.
Stay Comfortable
π¬οΈ Portable Fan
Labor is hard work.
A rechargeable fan becomes everyone's favorite item once contractions really pick up.
Trust me.
π§ Cooling Neck Wrap
Cold therapy around your neck during labor feels amazing.
Especially during transition.
ποΈ Weighted Eye Mask
Perfect for resting between contractions, after an epidural, or getting a little sleep postpartum.
Fuel Your Body
Birth is an endurance event.
Your body needs fuel.
π₯€ Electrolytes
Hydration matters before labor, during labor, and postpartum.
We love electrolyte packets because they're easy to pack and much more exciting than plain water.
π₯ Mamma Chia Pouches
Quick carbohydrates.
Hydration.
Easy calories.
Perfect if your provider allows eating during labor.
π₯© Beef Sticks & Protein Bars
Protein keeps your energy up during a long labor and makes a great first snack after baby arrives.
π¬ Joyride Sour Candy
Okay... hear me out.
Labor can sometimes feel overwhelming.
Research has shown that sour flavors can help interrupt feelings of panic and bring your brain back into the present moment.
If you're spiraling or feeling anxious, popping a sour candy into your mouth can help reset your senses.
Plus... they're delicious.
Birth Education & Encouragement
π The Birth Deck
One of my favorite labor tools.
These cards are packed with comfort techniques and ideas for every stage of labor.
They're especially helpful for partners who want clear guidance on how to support you.
β¨ Birth Affirmation Cards
Sometimes hearing,
"I can do this."
is exactly what you need.
Hang them around your room with your Command Hooks for constant encouragement throughout labor.
Freshen Up
𧴠Gentle Face Wash
There is nothing quite like washing your face after giving birth.
Pack your favorite travel-size cleanser.
You'll thank yourself later.
π Lanolips
Hospital air is DRY.
Don't forget lip balm.
Seriously.
Postpartum Comfort
π€ Disposable Postpartum Underwear
Softer than the mesh underwear many hospitals provide and incredibly comfortable during those first few days.
π©Ά Cozy Pajamas
Choose something soft, nursing-friendly, and comfortable enough for visitors and skin-to-skin snuggles.
βοΈ OOFOS Recovery Slides
Okay babe...
Throw these in your cart.
Labor is movement.
Walking.
Swaying.
Squatting.
Standing.
Your feet work hard.
By the time baby arrives they're often sore, swollen, and exhausted.
OOFOS are hands-down my favorite recovery sandals because they're unbelievably cushioned and supportive.
They're perfect for walking the hospital halls, heading home, and surviving those first postpartum weeks.
Your feet will thank you.
